Description
Balthasar Ress Hattenheimer Engelmannsberg Riesling QBA Trocken is a dry Riesling from a classified single vineyard above the village of Hattenheim, in the heart of Germany's Rheingau.
The Rheingau occupies a stretch where the Rhine turns west and runs for some thirty kilometres between Wiesbaden and Rüdesheim, leaving a bank of south-facing slopes looking out over the water. Hattenheim is one of its historic wine villages, a short walk from Kloster Eberbach, the Cistercian monastery founded in 1136 that did more than any other institution to shape German viticulture. Engelmannsberg is a classified single vineyard on the slope behind the village, and Balthasar Ress is a long-established family house based in Hattenheim itself. QbA Trocken marks the wine as dry, made in the traditional Rheingau manner, where Riesling ripens slowly and holds onto its acidity.
Serve at around ten degrees with river fish, roast pork or lightly spiced Asian dishes; it will also reward a few years in the cellar.
