Bannockburn 1314 a.d. Blanc 2020

Bannockburn 1314 a.d. Blanc is a Geelong white blend led by Sauvignon Blanc.

Three varieties make this up and the proportions move each year. This release runs heavily to Sauvignon Blanc at just over three-quarters, with Riesling on fifteen per cent and a small slice of Chardonnay finishing it, a marked change from the Chardonnay-dominant version before it. Fruit comes from plantings across the estate established between 1997 and 2016, all on dark clay and loam over weathered basalt and limestone, the same geology that underpins the more serious wines made here. The 1314 name refers to the Battle of Bannockburn, and the range exists for lunch: honest Geelong wine at a price that requires no discussion.

Lemon, cut grass and a faint herbal snap, with Riesling supplying the acid spine and Chardonnay a little flesh through the middle. Drink it cold, 8 to 10 degrees. Oysters, a goat's cheese tart, a herby chicken salad or fish and chips will all do nicely.
