Bannockburn 1314 a.d. Pinot Noir is an early-drinking Pinot Noir from Geelong.

Geelong's Moorabool Valley has been making serious Pinot Noir since Stuart Hooper planted here in 1974, and the estate's reputation rests on a savoury, structured style grown on volcanic soils over limestone. The 1314 label, named for the battle and the year, is the second tier: a barrel selection from across the estate blocks, chosen for freshness and for drinking sooner than the single-vineyard wines. The practices in the cellar are the same ones used on the top bottlings, which is why these wines punch above their price. This particular release has several years in bottle behind it.

Look for the estate's savoury signature: dark cherry, earth and spice with fine, dusty tannins and the acid still holding firm. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees. Roast duck, mushroom risotto, a plate of charcuterie, or a slice of pork terrine.
