Bannockburn 1314 a.d. Shiraz 2011

Bannockburn 1314 a.d. Shiraz is a mature, cool-climate Geelong Shiraz.

This was the first Shiraz to appear under the second label, released in 2016 after a long stretch in the cellar. Most of the fruit came off the Winery Block, planted in the early 1990s, with declassified parcels from the single-vineyard Range and De la Roche sites added in, which is a large part of why it drinks above its station. Fermentation was natural with sixty per cent whole bunches, and the wine spent twelve months in French oak hogsheads, a third of them new and mostly from Remond in Ladoix-Serrigny, before being racked to older puncheons for another eight. No fining, minimal filtration.

Fully mature now: redcurrant and dried herb over savoury, peppery depth, with tannins that have softened right down. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees and open it an hour ahead. Roast lamb, a beef and mushroom pie, or a piece of aged gouda.
