Bannockburn 1314 a.d. Shiraz 2015

Bannockburn 1314 a.d. Shiraz is a medium-bodied Shiraz from the Moorabool Valley in Geelong.

Four weeks on skins is the detail that stands out. Hand-picked fruit, chiefly from the Winery Block planted in the early 1990s and topped up with declassified Range vineyard material, fermented on wild yeast with a fifth whole bunches and stayed in contact with skins and stems for a month before pressing, which is long enough to build structure without tipping into extraction. Twelve months in French oak hogsheads followed, most of them from Remond in Ladoix-Serrigny, then no fining, the lightest filtration and a long wait in bottle before release. Geelong Shiraz at this weight owes as much to the northern Rhône as to South Australia.

Peppery and savoury, with redcurrant and dried herb and a fine, chalky tannin line that has begun to relax. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It suits a Sunday roast, braised beef cheek, or grilled mushrooms and thyme on toast.
