Description
Bannockburn 1314 Chardonnay is a Geelong Chardonnay drawn from across the estate's organically farmed blocks.
A parcel from the 1976 plantings goes into this, which tells you how little separates the second label from the first here. Fruit from across the estate was pressed as whole bunches and settled overnight, fermented on wild yeast, then left eight months on lees with no stirring before blending and bottling. Twenty per cent new oak sits so far inside the wine that it takes some looking for. The Moorabool Valley west of Geelong is a cool, windy, low-rainfall pocket on volcanic soils over limestone, and the wines it makes finish taut and saline far more often than plush.
Citrus and white peach with a chalky, saline finish and the lees giving just enough breadth. Serve at 11 to 12 degrees, no colder, and let it open in the glass. Roast chicken, scallops, a leek tart, or prawns off the barbecue.
