Description
Bannockburn 1314 Chardonnay is a barrel selection drawn from the estate's Geelong Chardonnay crop.
Barrel selection is the key phrase: the cellar work is identical to the top estate bottling, and the only difference is which barrels get chosen. Fruit from several blocks, including a solid share of the pedigreed 1976 plantings, was pressed as whole bunches directly to hogsheads, a fifth of them new, for fermentation. Full malolactic conversion followed, then eight months on lees without stirring. Matt Holmes has a light hand with oak and the site does the rest, since the volcanic soils over limestone here give a saline grip that makes new wood almost invisible.
Bright and bursting with citrus and stone fruit, with hints of richness and spice. Tight lines and racy acidity meet a fleshy weight and a silky texture, and it will flourish with time in bottle. Serve at 11 to 12 degrees with a whole roast fish or a bowl of mussels.
