Description
Bannockburn 1314 Chardonnay is an estate-grown Geelong Chardonnay of unusual polish for its price.
Only ten per cent new oak this time, and the wood is invisible for it. Fruit came from several blocks across the organically farmed estate, including a healthy dose of the 1976 plantings, pressed as whole bunches straight to hogsheads for fermentation. Eighty-five per cent of the wine completed malolactic conversion, then seven months on lees with no stirring. As a barrel selection off the same crop as the top estate wine, made the same way in the same cellar, it lands only marginally short of it, which in the context of Bannockburn Chardonnay is saying a good deal. The 2025 season has lifted this bottling again.
Fleshy stony-citrus flavours, ocean-spray freshness and a long, satiny finish. There is real intensity here for a second-label wine. Serve at 11 to 12 degrees. Good with grilled flathead, chicken schnitzel, a gruyère and onion tart, or oysters with lemon.
