Description
Bannockburn Chardonnay 1.5L MAGNUM is a 1.5-litre bottling of this Geelong estate Chardonnay under screwcap.
Magnums are worth seeking out for wines with this much acid, because a larger volume to the same neck means slower development, and under Stelvin the trajectory is slower still. The quality traces back to Olive Tree Hill, planted in 1976 and abutting the S.R.H. parcel, and the Winery Block from 1981, both sitting on volcanic soils over limestone clays with vines averaging around thirty-five years. Kelly Lane's Clone 76 has been part of the blend recently. Whole-bunch pressed, settled overnight, wild-fermented mainly in 500-litre French oak hogsheads with a fifth new, seventy per cent through malolactic, ten months on lees without stirring.
Taut and stony, with grapefruit and white peach, a nutty lees undertow and the salinity that marks out this estate's whites. Serve at 11 to 12 degrees and give it air. A magnum is a dinner-party wine: roast chicken, a seafood platter, or roasted vegetables and goat's cheese.
