Bannockburn De La Roche Shiraz Museum 2011

Bannockburn De La Roche Shiraz Museum is a cellar-aged single-block Geelong Shiraz, released when the estate judges it ready.

Each year the Hooper family set a portion aside to mature in their own cellar, and this is one of those bottlings. The fruit grows on 0.8 hectares of volcanic rubble planted in 2007, a westerly continuation of the Serré plateau, from Best’s and Tahbilk cuttings on a mix of rootstock and own roots. Unusually for the label, 2011 was fully destemmed. Indigenous yeast carried the ferment, then a year in French puncheons with a third new, and a second year in five-year-old barriques before bottling. A cool season, a long élevage, and well over a decade of quiet since.

Age has softened the edges here: dried cherry, leather, wet stone and spice, with tannin now fine and settled. Serve at 16 degrees without much ceremony. Slow-cooked beef, mushrooms on toast or a hard washed-rind cheese.
