Bannockburn De La Roche Shiraz Museum 2013

Bannockburn De La Roche Shiraz Museum is a mature single-vineyard Shiraz from the estate’s own cellar in Geelong.

Whole bunches went into the fermenter in 2013, a warm season that gave structure and depth, and the wine then had two years in wood: twelve months in French puncheons with a third new, twelve more in barriques five years old. The source is a 0.8-hectare plateau strewn with volcanic stone, planted in 2007 above the De La Terre slope, where Best’s and Tahbilk cuttings sit on a mix of own roots and rootstock. Only the Best’s selection remains in the blend; the balance is Chardonnay now, the close-planted block named after the estate’s vineyard manager of 35 years.

Stem spice, black olive and dark plum, with dusty tannin and a long finish. Decant it and serve at 17 degrees. Braised short rib or a lamb ragu is the obvious call, though it handles hard cheese just as well.
