Bannockburn Douglas 2017

Bannockburn Douglas is a Cabernet-led red blend from the estate’s Geelong vineyards.

The label honours Sir James Douglas, the Scottish knight known as the Black Douglas and one of the commanders of the Wars of Scottish Independence — the estate’s Scottish borrowings run deep. The blend itself changes shape with the season: Shiraz lifts the fruit profile in cooler years, Pinot Noir takes that job in warmer ones. From a strong Victorian vintage, the 2017 settled at 82 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon, 11 per cent Shiraz and 7 per cent Merlot. Each variety fermented separately on wild yeast, then went to hogsheads with a fifth new for fifteen months, before racking, blending and bottling in May 2018.

Cool-climate Cabernet, so blackcurrant and bay leaf up front, then graphite, dried herbs and firm, fine tannin. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees, decanted. Roast lamb with rosemary, aged cheddar, or a beef and red wine pie.
