Bannockburn Douglas Museum 2014

Bannockburn Douglas Museum is a mature, Shiraz-led red blend from the estate’s cellar in Geelong.

In 2014 the blend flipped: Shiraz led at 65 per cent, with Cabernet Sauvignon at 20, Merlot at 5, and a tenth of the wine made up by Pinot Noir. Almost all of it grew on the Winery Block, from vines planted in 1981, 1990 and 1996, with the Pinot off a 2004 planting. Each parcel was handled on its own, with partial whole-bunch fermentation and a carbonic component, then eighteen months in a mix of French barriques and hogsheads. Bottles like this get set aside by the Hooper family and released when the cellar says so, which is why the wine arrives already open for business.

A wine that starts arguments at the table. Savoury and spicy, with brambly fruit, tea leaf, struck match and damp earth over chalky tannin. Serve at 17 degrees. Good with a beef braise, roast pork, or something off the charcoal grill.
