Description
Bannockburn Grigsby Chardonnay is a certified organic Chardonnay from 0.87 hectares of close-planted vines in Geelong.
The block used to be called De la Roche, of the rock, which tells you what lies underfoot: dark cracking clay over weathered basalt and limestone. Originally planted in 2007 and grafted from Shiraz to Bernard clone 76 in 2019, it runs 1.2-metre rows with a metre between vines, north-south. The fruit was whole-bunch pressed, settled overnight, then wild-fermented in French hogsheads with about a quarter new; malolactic went through the entire blend naturally, and ten unstirred months on lees followed. Of the three single-vineyard 2024 Chardonnays from the estate, this is the most textural of them.
Cool and focused on the nose — ripe pear, yellow apple skin, a touch of salted caramel — then a chewy palate held together by saline freshness. Serve at 12 to 13 degrees. Roast chicken, grilled prawns, or a mushroom tart.
