Bannockburn Range Shiraz 2012

Bannockburn Range Shiraz is a single-vineyard Shiraz from the oldest vines on the estate, bottled only in the finest years.

The Range vineyard went in during 1974 and covers 1.66 hectares of black-brown loam over a limestone base. Those soils carry more fertility than the estate’s Winery blocks, which gives the vines a larger leaf area and a more powerful expression of the variety, and the wine is only bottled on its own when the season warrants it. 2012 was one such year. Michael Glover made this one, hand-harvesting and fermenting whole bunches on wild yeast for a full 31 days on skins, then maturing the wine mostly in puncheons before bottling in 2014. Very few Glover Ranges exist.

Dense and complex after more than a decade: dark plum, iron, dried herbs and leather, with the tannin now polished. Decant it and serve at 17 to 18 degrees. Slow-roasted lamb shoulder, or a beef and mushroom pie.
