Bannockburn S.R.H. 2009

Bannockburn S.R.H. is the estate’s tête de cuvée Chardonnay, from the oldest Chardonnay rows at Olive Tree Hill.

The initials belong to Stuart Reginald Hooper, who founded the place, and the wine comes from twelve rows of dry-grown vines whose roots reach into ancient marine sediment. 2009 was brutally dry and produced the smallest crop the estate had seen: the close-planted Serré vines gave nothing at all that year, while these rows managed a nominal 500 grams a vine. Michael Glover picked early and fermented wild in barriques, a third new and lightly toasted Tronçais, then left the wine on gross lees in puncheon for two full years and a third year on fine lees in tank.

Three years on lees shows plainly: saline, mineral and taut, with citrus pith, ground spice and a long, austere line. Serve at 12 to 13 degrees and give it air. Roast chicken, seared scallops, or a piece of aged comté.
