Bannockburn S.R.H. 2011

Bannockburn S.R.H. is the estate’s flagship single-site Chardonnay from Geelong.

Ancient marine sediment forms the bedrock under these twelve rows, and the vines are dry-grown with roots well into it, which is where the saline spine comes from. They are the oldest Chardonnay plantings in the Olive Tree Hill vineyard, and the label carries the initials of the estate’s founder, Stuart Reginald Hooper. 2011 was a cool season, and as a rule the cooler the year the more mineral this wine turns out. More than a decade on it has made good on an early reputation, gaining complexity while holding the fine line that defines it.

Intense and finely built, with citrus pith and rind, ground spice, leesy complexity and a saline freshness running the full length of the palate. It keeps opening with air. Serve at 12 to 13 degrees with roast chicken, crab, or comté.
