Bannockburn S.R.H. 2014

Bannockburn S.R.H. is the estate’s single-vineyard Chardonnay, named for its founder.

The name abbreviates Stuart Reginald Hooper, who planted the Olive Tree Hill vineyard in 1976, and the wine comes from the twelve oldest Chardonnay rows on the property. They are own-rooted, dry-grown and set over ancient marine sediment, which is the source of the salinity marking every release. The estate has made this wine in a consistent register for decades: whole-bunch pressing, wild fermentation in French hogsheads, and a long stretch on lees without stirring. Very little is done to interrupt the site.

Taut and mineral in style, with citrus, white stone fruit and a saline edge over a long finish. Serve at 12 to 13 degrees in a white Burgundy glass. Roast chicken, grilled fish, or a hard alpine cheese.
