Bannockburn Sauvignon Blanc 2019

Bannockburn Sauvignon Blanc is one of Australia’s more complex takes on the variety, grown in Geelong.

The 2019 season was warm and dry, and the wine carries that as richness and structure. Fruit came mainly from the original 1996 Sauvignon Blanc plantings at the property’s eastern edge, on a block next to the Serré Pinot Noir rows, with the balance from a small parcel by the dam; both sit in the certified organic part of the estate. The crop was split three ways: a third destemmed and lightly crushed for a week on skins, finishing in older puncheons; a third whole-bunch pressed to puncheons with 10 per cent new; the rest pressed to tank.

A dinner-table wine with some muscle: gentle tropical fruit, quince, savoury richness, seams of salinity and a long close. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees. It has handled savoury shellfish broths with herbs and root vegetables particularly well.
