Description
Bannockburn Shiraz in 1.5-litre magnum is a distinctive cool-climate Victorian Shiraz, bottled large.
Élevage took two stages in 2023: ten undisturbed months in hogsheads and puncheons with 10 per cent new oak, then six more in 1,200-litre old oak vats before blending and bottling. Hand-picked parcels had fermented separately on wild yeast with roughly 10 per cent whole bunch and a carbonic portion. Fruit comes predominantly from the south-facing Winery Block, planted in 1990, and the Range Block from 1974, with some declassified high-density De La Roche included. Matt Holmes has cut back the new oak over the years, reading the mature Winery Block as inherently savoury and best left alone.
Savoury and mineral more than sweet, with dark berry, black pepper, graphite and dried herbs over fine, firm tannin. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. Lamb shoulder, beef ribs, or a mushroom and barley stew.
