Bannockburn Shiraz 2023

Bannockburn Shiraz is a savoury, site-driven Shiraz from Geelong’s Moorabool Valley.

Every parcel came in by hand and fermented wild on its own, with about 10 per cent whole bunch overall and part of the fruit going through carbonic maceration. After pressing, the wine went to hogsheads and puncheons with 10 per cent new, sat untouched for ten months, then finished in 1,200-litre old oak vats for a further six. The blend leans on the south-facing Winery Block from 1990 and the Range Block from 1974, plus high-density De La Roche declassified into it, all on scoria, basalt, clay and loam over limestone-clay.

Old oak keeps it quiet. Graphite and pepper sit alongside dark berry fruit, with a savoury core and fine, drying tannin. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. Braised beef, lamb shoulder, or a lentil and mushroom shepherd’s pie.
