Beau Rivage Chenin Blanc 2022

Beau Rivage Chenin Blanc is a Californian Chenin Blanc from a project run by critic-turned-winegrower William Kelley.

Kelley is best known for his reviews at the Wine Advocate, but he is also a gifted winemaker, with a micro-Burgundy domaine and, before that, this. In 2016 he and Frank Ingriselli went looking for organically farmed old vines in Californian sub-regions where variety and climate lined up, which led them to Chenin Blanc in Clarksburg, on the outskirts of Sacramento. They applied artisanal French technique and waited to see what happened; what happened reset the conversation about Californian Chenin. Made in Calistoga from 1960s vines, with two picking lots, wild ferments, and eight-year-old low-toast Burgundy barrels.

Dry and textural, with citrus, quince and lanolin, a chalky grip and a saline finish that runs long. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees. Roast chicken, pork loin with apple, or a plate of oysters.
