Bekkers Clarendon Syrah 2023

Bekkers Clarendon Syrah is an aromatic, silky McLaren Vale red from the high Clarendon hills.

Behind the label are Toby and Emmanuelle Bekkers, a viticulturist and a French-born winemaker who set out to make fine, textural wines in McLaren Vale. Clarendon sits in the higher, cooler northern corner of the region, where the wines have less density than those from the valley floor but more lift, perfume and spice. The Syrah is deliberately made without syrupy concentration or heavy oak, aiming to capture the region's generosity with silky texture and elegance. Expect dark blue and red fruits with Indian spice and fragrant aromatics.

Serve at around 16 to 18 degrees, with a quick decant if drinking young. It's a fine match for slow-roasted lamb shoulder with spices, beef short ribs or a mushroom and lentil ragù. Will develop further over the next decade.
