Description
Benjamin Leroux Auxey-Duresses is a white Burgundy from two north-facing terroirs that run straight up against the Meursault boundary.
Auxey-Duresses lies in the side valley behind Meursault and Monthelie, a cooler pocket of the Côte de Beaune where the cold air rolls down from the Hautes Côtes. The fruit here comes from Les Hautés and La Macabrée, both abutting Meursault's Les Vireuils Dessous and Les Meix Chavaux, with the oldest vines dating to 1946. Facing north, these are genuinely fresh sites, and like most high vineyards on the Côte they tend to come into their own in warmer years. Benjamin Leroux, who spent fifteen years running Domaine du Comte Armand before establishing his own house in Beaune, has long treated this as one of the range's value wines. It was vinified in 12-hectolitre casks, with part of the blend raised for fifteen months in 600-litre barrels.
Drinks well young and will hold for eight years or more. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled fish or a soft washed-rind cheese.
