Benjamin Leroux Auxey-Duresses 2024

Benjamin Leroux Auxey-Duresses is a village white Burgundy from the cool side of the hill above Meursault.

Two lieux-dits feed it, Les Hautés and La Macabrée. Both press against the Meursault boundary beside Les Vireuils Dessous and Les Meix Chavaux, and the oldest vines were planted in 1946. The land faces north and takes the cold air rolling down from the Hautes Côtes, which makes for a very fresh site and a wine that drinks well young and ages well too. Leroux has built his Beaune-based house on exactly this kind of address: unfashionable ground, carefully farmed, picked before acidity goes, and raised without fuss. This has a claim to be the best example yet shipped here.

Racy and mineral with a saline edge, and more depth than the appellation usually offers: white peach, lemon, crushed stone. Serve at 12 to 13 degrees. Roast chicken, scallops, or a tart of leek and gruyère.
