Benjamin Leroux Beaune 1er Cru Les Cent-Vignes 2021

Benjamin Leroux Beaune 1er Cru Les Cent-Vignes comes from a half-hectare plot on the brown grèze litée gravels at the western edge of Beaune.

Les Cent-Vignes is one of the first vineyards you meet heading west out of Beaune, a village whose Premier Crus have long been undervalued and are now drawing more attention. Leroux began working with a grower here in 2015 and, convinced of the quality, bought the 0.5-hectare plot in 2021, so from the following release it becomes a domaine-owned bottling. The plot sits on grèze litée, the layered brown scree gravel typical of this slope, and is planted in two sections: a parcel of 50-year-old vines and a younger block planted in 2016. Leroux considers the two complementary, the old vines bringing depth and intensity and the young ones freshness, and has said he would take on more fruit in the appellation without hesitation. The wine is sealed under natural cork.

Approachable after two or three years and good for a decade. Serve at 16-18°C with roast beef, duck or a plate of Époisses.
