Benjamin Leroux Blagny 1er Cru La Pièce Sous Le Bois is a red from one of the last hectares of Pinot Noir left in Blagny.

Blagny is the appellation used for red wine grown in the hamlet above Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet; the whites from the same slopes are sold as Meursault or Puligny, which is why so little Pinot Noir survives there. Barely five hectares remain, and Leroux has close to one of them. His vines sit above the Dos de l'Âne in the lower part of the vineyard, on limestone-rich soil at altitude. He first vinified a Pinot Noir from the site in 2014, liked it enough to look for land of his own, and acquired an estate parcel in 2017. Leroux has argued for years that this high, cool terroir has a future for both colours, and rather more so as the climate warms.

Approachable after two or three years and good for eight to ten. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, grilled mushrooms or a plate of charcuterie.
