Description
Benjamin Leroux Bourgogne Aligoté comes from an estate-owned parcel of fifty-year-old vines inside Meursault's Les Belles Roses.
Aligoté is Burgundy's second white grape and has spent most of its life in the shadow of Chardonnay, though the better sites and older plantings have been steadily rehabilitating it. Leroux has form with the variety from his years at Domaine du Comte Armand, and this bottling comes from vines planted within the commune of Meursault rather than from the marginal land the appellation is often associated with. The parcel is planted to Aligoté Doré, the low-yielding, higher-quality cultivar of the variety, which gives smaller berries and rather more substance than the ordinary strain. The 2020 was fermented with indigenous yeasts and raised entirely in seasoned 12-hectolitre oval casks, an élevage chosen to give the wine breadth without adding oak character to a grape that does not need it.
Drink now and over the next four or five years. Serve at 10-12°C with oysters, gougères or a plate of charcuterie.
