Description
Benjamin Leroux was among the first in Burgundy to take old-vine Aligoté seriously, and this bottling remains at the top end of the category.
Two components carry the wine: a parcel of 50-year-old vines in Meursault's Les Belles Roses climat, and a rare block of 85- to 105-year-old vines in Bouzeron, the Côte Chalonnaise village that has its own appellation for the variety. Both are planted to Aligoté Doré, the low-yielding, higher-quality strain of the grape, and old material of this sort is increasingly hard to find. The wine fermented and matured in seasoned 12-hectolitre oval casks and glass Wineglobes, a combination that builds texture without adding wood flavour, giving a creamy, layered Aligoté that keeps its vibrancy. A further cuvée from old vines in Chassagne is on the way from the cellar.
Drink over the next three to four years; serve at 10-12°C with oysters, mussels or a fresh goat's cheese.
