Description
Benjamin Leroux Bourgogne Aligoté is a white Burgundy made from old-vine Aligoté.
Back in his Domaine du Comte Armand days, Leroux was among the first in Burgundy to take old-vine Aligoté seriously, at a time when most of it went into Kir. The backbone of this wine is his parcel of fifty-year-old vines in Meursault, planted to Aligoté Doré, the low-yielding, higher-quality cultivar and not the productive strain that gave the variety its reputation. The winemaking is precise and unshowy, which is what this grape asks for: it has acidity to spare and rewards a light hand more than a heavy one.
Bracing, dry and clean, with green apple, lemon pith, a chalky bite and a saline finish. Serve properly cold, 10 to 11 degrees. Oysters, snails in garlic butter, or a plate of warm gougeres, and it handles a vinaigrette better than most whites.
