Benjamin Leroux Bourgogne Grand Champs Aligoté 2024

Benjamin Leroux Bourgogne Grand Champs Aligoté is a single-parcel Aligoté from Chassagne-Montrachet.

Leroux came across this parcel late in 2022 while hunting for massale cuttings, and after tasting the first vintage out of cask he kept the wine instead. Grands Champs lies in Chassagne-Montrachet below the village, next to the restored nineteenth-century washhouse at Fontaine Saulx. What makes the plot unusual is its condition: vines close to a hundred years old with no replacements among them, all of them healthy. Fermentation and ageing took place in a 1,200-litre neutral oak cask. The small bunches give it far more texture and spicy complexity than the straight bottling.

Little here reads as Aligote at first. Deep, chewy and full-bodied for the variety, with citrus, spice and a stony grip through a long finish. Serve at 11 to 12 degrees. Roast chicken, veal, or a rich fish stew with saffron.
