Benjamin Leroux Chambolle-Musigny 2021

Benjamin Leroux Chambolle-Musigny is a village wine assembled from both the top and the bottom of the slope, including some declassified Premier Cru fruit.

Chambolle-Musigny is the most finely drawn of the Côte de Nuits communes, its limestone-heavy soils giving perfume and lift rather than density. Leroux's blend draws on a 1955 parcel of Les Véroilles, in the village portion of that high, rocky vineyard, together with a healthy share of Les Athets at the foot of the hill, where clay, silt and limestone bring flesh and breadth. Declassified fruit from the Premier Cru Les Chatelots is also in the mix. Vinification used roughly 30 per cent whole bunches, and the wine was raised with about 20 per cent new oak, a restrained regime that lets the village character carry. The result is medium-bodied, gently gripped and quite peppery on the close.

Enjoyable from two or three years and holding for eight or so; serve at 16-18°C with roast pork, charcuterie or grilled quail.
