Benjamin Leroux Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Baudines 2023

Benjamin Leroux Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Baudines sits high on the south-western edge of the village, near the tree line.

Les Baudines covers 3.6 hectares and is essentially a continuation of Les Embazées, but positioned higher up the hillside on poorer soil with a greater proportion of limestone. It is a cool site with mostly white, rocky clay, and the combination of altitude and stony ground makes it slower to ripen than the crus further down the slope. That suits Benjamin Leroux, whose whites are built on definition rather than weight; he has spoken of the site as being aligned with his aim of producing fine-boned, chiselled Chassagne. His vines here were planted in the 1980s. The wine is fermented and raised in barrel with a restrained proportion of new oak, in keeping with the house approach across the range.

Best from three to ten years; serve with roast fish, poultry or a soft goat's cheese at 10-12°C.
