Benjamin Leroux Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Baudines 2024

Benjamin Leroux Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Baudines is a premier cru white Burgundy from high on the Chassagne slope.

Les Baudines runs to 3.6 hectares near the tree line on Chassagne’s south-western border, effectively a continuation of Les Embazées but higher up the hillside, on poorer ground with more limestone in it. The soils are white, rocky clay and the site is genuinely cool, which aligns neatly with the fine-boned, chiselled style of Chassagne that Leroux is after. His vines were planted in the 1980s. Only twenty-four bottles came into the country, which is the usual shape of things with this producer: small parcels, smaller allocations.

Balanced and ripe with a pulpy middle and a racy, saline close — citrus, white flowers, wet stone. Serve at 12 to 13 degrees in a proper glass. Turbot, roast chicken, or scallops with brown butter.
