Benjamin Leroux Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Tête du Clos 2020

Benjamin Leroux Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Tête du Clos comes from the rocky apex of Morgeot, a site the grower calls the Chevalier-Montrachet of the south.

Chassagne-Montrachet holds the largest run of Premier Cru land in the Côte de Beaune, and Morgeot is its biggest cru, itself divided into many sub-climats. Tête du Clos lies at the top of Morgeot where the soil is at its thinnest and stoniest: barely twenty centimetres of topsoil over white clay, with limestone breaking the surface. It sits at much the same altitude as Les Embazees but gives a quite different wine, at once richer and more mineral, which is where the Chevalier comparison comes from. Leroux farms 0.4 hectares of old vines here planted in 1955, and the small, concentrated bunches they carry bring genuine depth of fruit to go with the wine's earthy, stony cut. It has a long-standing reputation as a baby Grand Cru.

Give it three years and drink over the following decade. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, scallops or a mild washed-rind cheese.
