Description

Tête du Clos sits at the apex of Chassagne-Montrachet's Morgeot, and Benjamin Leroux calls it the Chevalier-Montrachet of the south.

Morgeot is a large premier cru made up of many sub-climats, and Tête du Clos occupies its highest, rockiest point, where barely 20 centimetres of topsoil covers white clay and surface limestone. It sits at much the same altitude as Les Embazées but gives a quite different Chassagne, at once richer and more mineral, which is where the comparison with Chevalier comes from. Leroux works 0.4 hectares of old vines planted in 1955; they produce small, concentrated clusters that bring genuine depth of fruit to set against the earthy mineral spine. The wine lives up to its reputation as a baby grand cru. It was aged in two once-used barrels, so no new wood is involved.

Give it four to ten years; serve at 10-12°C with roast poultry, scallops or a firm mountain cheese.
