Benjamin Leroux Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Tête du Clos 2023

Benjamin Leroux Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Tête du Clos comes from a rocky parcel at the apex of Morgeot that the winemaker calls the Chevalier-Montrachet of the south.

Chassagne-Montrachet lies at the southern end of the Côte de Beaune and Morgeot is its largest premier cru, subdivided into numerous climats of quite different character. Tête du Clos sits at the top of the vineyard, where barely twenty centimetres of topsoil covers white clay and a great deal of surface limestone. It stands at roughly the same altitude as Les Embazées but gives a richer and more mineral style of Chassagne, which is where the Chevalier comparison comes from. Leroux farms a 0.4-hectare parcel planted in 1955, and the old vines produce small, concentrated bunches that carry real depth of fruit alongside the earthy mineral line. The 2023 was raised in two second-use barrels, so the oak is a frame rather than a flavour.

Give it three to ten years and match it with turbot, roast pork or a chicken and morel fricassee. Serve at 10 to 12°C.
