Description
Benjamin Leroux Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle lies immediately below the grand cru Chapelle-Chambertin and shares much of its ground.
Petite Chapelle sits on the lower part of the slope on the Morey side of Gevrey-Chambertin, directly beneath Chapelle-Chambertin. The soils are limestone scree under a thin layer of clay topsoil, and the proximity to the grands crus shows in the breed of the wine. This is only the third release Leroux has made from the site. He works with restrained extraction, a portion of whole bunches and modest new oak, and in his hands Petite Chapelle gives a prettier, more elegant reading of Gevrey than the firmer, more structured Les Cazetiers he also bottles. Gevrey-Chambertin is the largest of the Côte de Nuits communes and its premiers crus vary widely; this is one of the more approachable.
Approachable after three years and good for a dozen; serve with roast beef, duck or a mushroom ragù at 16-18°C.
