Benjamin Leroux Gevrey-Chambertin 2020

Benjamin Leroux Gevrey-Chambertin is a village blend drawing half its fruit from 50-year-old vines in Les Seuvrées and the limestone-rich La Justice.

Gevrey-Chambertin is the largest of the Côte de Nuits communes, and a good village wine here depends on assembling complementary parcels from a wide vineyard area. Half of this cuvée comes from 50-year-old vines in Les Seuvrées, on the Morey border, and from the northern, limestone-rich La Justice. Old vines in Les Jeunes Rois and fruit from Champerrier and En Champs, both on the Brochon side of the appellation, complete the blend. The Jeunes Rois parcel adds a further dimension and is good enough that Leroux has been tempted to bottle it separately. Each parcel was vinified separately before assembly, 80 per cent of the fruit was destemmed, and the wine was aged in a mix of 600-litre and 225-litre barrels, around a fifth of them new.

Ready after three or four years and good for ten; serve at 16–18°C with roast beef, coq au vin or a plate of aged Comté.
