Benjamin Leroux Gevrey-Chambertin 2021

Benjamin Leroux Gevrey-Chambertin is a village wine assembled from six lieux-dits at opposite ends of the commune.

Gevrey-Chambertin is the largest of the Côte de Nuits villages and the one with the greatest spread of terroir, from the grand cru slope above the village to the flatter, cooler ground toward Brochon in the north. This bottling draws on fifty-year-old vines in Les Seuvrées, on the Morey border, along with the limestone-rich northern climats of La Justice and Les Crais, some old vines in Les Jeunes Rois, and fruit from Champerrier and En Champs on the Brochon side. Benjamin Leroux rates the Jeunes Rois component highly enough to have considered bottling it separately, but keeps it in the blend. Each parcel was vinified apart before assembly, 80% of the fruit was destemmed, and the wine was raised in 600-litre and 225-litre barrels, a fifth of them new. Bottled under natural cork.

Worth three to four years in the cellar and good for a decade beyond that. Serve at 16-18°C with roast beef, coq au vin or Époisses.
