Benjamin Leroux Gevrey-Chambertin 2022

With En Champs now bottled separately, Leroux's village Gevrey-Chambertin is built around old-vine fruit from Les Seuvrées in the south of the commune.

Gevrey-Chambertin is the largest of the great Côte de Nuits communes and its village land varies widely, so the blend matters. Les Seuvrées provides the core, with northern vineyards including Les Crais and Les Champerriers filling it out, and a parcel in the Brochon vineyard Les Jeunes Rois adding dimension and a spicy freshness. Each parcel was vinified separately before blending, with 85% of the fruit destemmed, and the wine aged in a mix of 600-litre and 225-litre barrels of which 15% were new. Leroux's approach across his village wines favours perfume and fine tannin over extract, which is not the usual register for Gevrey and gives this bottling a seductive, finely drawn character.

Ready after two years and good for eight; serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, beef stew or a mature washed-rind cheese.
