Benjamin Leroux Gevrey-Chambertin 2023

Benjamin Leroux's village Gevrey-Chambertin now comes entirely from parcels in the north of the appellation.

Gevrey-Chambertin is the largest of the Côte de Nuits communes and the character of its village wines depends heavily on where the fruit sits. Leroux's blend has been reshaped: En Champs is now bottled separately and Les Seuvrées in the south has gone, leaving Les Crais, Creux Brouillard and Les Champerriers to lead, joined by Les Jeunes Rois in neighbouring Brochon, which brings dimension and a spicy freshness. Each parcel is picked and vinified separately before blending, with 80% of the fruit destemmed, and the wine is aged in a mix of 600-litre and 225-litre barrels of which 15% are new. The result is a Gevrey with more finesse and perfume than the muscular reputation of the village would suggest, which is characteristic of Leroux's hand across the range.

Give it three to eight years; serve at 16–18°C with roast lamb, game birds or mushroom dishes.
