Benjamin Leroux Grand Cru Bâtard-Montrachet 1.5L MAGNUM 2020

Benjamin Leroux Grand Cru Bâtard-Montrachet is bottled only in magnum, from a 0.16-hectare plot directly across the road from Le Montrachet.

Bâtard-Montrachet straddles the boundary between Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet and is one of the great white Grands Crus of the Côte de Beaune, giving Chardonnay of more breadth and power than its neighbours above the road. Leroux's plot sits on the Chassagne side, next to the parcel farmed by the Hospices de Beaune, and is planted to forty-year-old vines. He took over full control of the vineyard work here in 2016 and has since had the original stone entrance restored, which makes the parcel easy to pick out along the boundary between Bâtard and Le Montrachet. Production is tiny: just 530 litres this year, fermented in a bespoke barrel made for the harvest and then racked into two older barrels once fermentation had finished. The 1.5-litre format suits its cellaring.

Worth five to fifteen years in the cellar. Serve at 10-12°C with lobster, roast Bresse chicken or aged hard cheese.
