Benjamin Leroux Grand Cru Bâtard-Montrachet 1.5L MAGNUM 2023

Benjamin Leroux Grand Cru Bâtard-Montrachet is made from a 0.16-hectare estate parcel that lies a few metres across the road from the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti holding in Le Montrachet.

Bâtard-Montrachet straddles the boundary between Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, sitting below Le Montrachet on deeper, heavier soils that give a broader and more powerful wine than its illustrious neighbour. Leroux's plot is on the Chassagne side, next to that of the Hospices de Beaune, and is planted to vines around forty years old. He took over full control of the vineyard work here in 2016 and has since restored the original stone entrance to the parcel. Along with Les Genevrières, Bâtard was among the first vineyards he picked in 2023. Three barrels were produced, with less than one-third new oak, meaning a single new 228-litre barrel in the blend. The wine is bottled in magnum here, a format that slows its evolution considerably.

Built for the long haul, it is best from five years and will run well past fifteen; serve with lobster, poulet de Bresse or turbot at 10 to 12°C.
