Benjamin Leroux Grand Cru Bâtard-Montrachet 2024

Benjamin Leroux Grand Cru Bâtard-Montrachet is the finest white in his range and one of the great wines of the appellation.

Location tells much of the story: a 0.16-hectare holding of forty-year-old vines pressed up against the Hospices de Beaune parcel, with DRC’s slice of Le Montrachet perhaps fifteen metres away on the far side of the road. It falls on the Chassagne side of the vineyard. Leroux gained complete control of the farming here in 2016, and the difference in the wine since then is not subtle; he also restored the old stone entrance between Montrachet and Bâtard, so the plot is easy to pick out from the road. Twelve bottles shipped.

Restrained on first pour and quietly enormous underneath, with citrus, almond, white peach and a taut mineral spine. It needs time. Serve at 13 degrees with lobster, turbot, or veal in cream, once you have given it the years it asks for.
