Benjamin Leroux Grand Cru Charmes-Chambertin 2021

Benjamin Leroux Grand Cru Charmes-Chambertin is built around 0.15 hectares of 1965 vines in Mazoyères-Dessus, the favoured upper part of the vineyard.

Charmes-Chambertin is the largest of the Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Crus and takes in the adjoining Mazoyères, which may be sold under either name. Leroux's historic source lies in Mazoyères-Dessus, close to Aux Combottes and the Grand Cru Latricières-Chambertin, where the slope is better drained and the wines carry more definition than the flatter sections below. This release adds a parcel from Charmes-Chambertin proper, so the cuvée now blends both sectors of the vineyard. Winemaking follows the pattern Leroux has settled on for his Gevrey wines: around one-third whole bunches in the fermentation, gentle extraction and maturation in barrel with a measured proportion of new oak. The result is a Grand Cru with depth and powdery structure rather than obvious weight.

Best from around five years and capable of fifteen or more; serve at 16-18°C alongside braised beef cheek, roast game birds or aged Comté.
