Description
Benjamin Leroux Grand Cru Charmes-Chambertin now blends his established Mazoyères fruit with a new plot of organically farmed vines in the lieu-dit Aux Charmes.
Charmes-Chambertin lies below Chambertin on the lower slope of Gevrey-Chambertin and takes in the neighbouring Mazoyères-Chambertin, whose growers may sell their wine under either name. The result is a Grand Cru of some range, from the deeper, cooler soils of Mazoyères to the stonier upper section nearer the road. Leroux's new source sits on that upper part, in Aux Charmes, close to and directly opposite the boundary between Latricières-Chambertin and Chambertin itself; the vines are mature and organically tended. Blended with his existing Mazoyères fruit, the cuvée now runs to four barrels. Vinification follows his usual approach for Gevrey, with a proportion of whole bunches and measured new oak, aiming at depth without heaviness.
Best from five to eight years and worth cellaring longer, it suits roast beef, game birds or a mature Époisses. Serve at 16 to 18°C.
