Description
Benjamin Leroux Grand Cru Corton-Charlemagne is drawn entirely from Les Languettes, a cool parcel in Aloxe-Corton sitting directly below the woods.
Corton-Charlemagne is the great white grand cru of the Côte de Beaune, wrapping around the upper slopes of the hill of Corton where pale, marl-rich soils and altitude keep the wines tense despite their power. Benjamin Leroux, who made the wines at Domaine du Comte Armand before founding his own house in Beaune, sources this bottling entirely from Les Languettes, a cool site in Aloxe-Corton wedged between Les Pougets and Le Corton. He favours it for its intense, white-soil expression, though its position beneath the treeline brings the practical nuisance of wild boar and rabbits emerging from the forest. One-third new oak is used, a measured amount for a wine of this weight, and the result is a powerful Charlemagne built on cool, mineral lines.
It can be broached at five years but is better at ten and will hold much longer; serve with lobster, roast veal or aged hard cheese at 10-12°C.
