Description
Benjamin Leroux Grand Cru Corton-Charlemagne comes entirely from Les Languettes, one of the coolest parcels on the Aloxe-Corton side of the hill.
Corton-Charlemagne is the great white Grand Cru of the Côte de Beaune, a broad amphitheatre of vineyard wrapping the upper slopes of the Corton hill across Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses and Ladoix. Benjamin Leroux established his own house in Beaune in 2007 after more than a decade running Domaine du Comte Armand, and he buys and farms with the eye of a grower. Les Languettes lies wedged between Les Pougets and Le Corton, directly beneath the woods, and Leroux values it for the cool, white-soil minerality it gives; the proximity to the forest also costs him fruit to wild boar and rabbits each year. The grapes are pressed gently without crushing, the juice is lightly settled and fermented without sulphur in a mixture of small and large casks, with about one-third new oak.
This has the concentration to reward eight to fifteen years in bottle, and suits roast chicken, lobster or a well-aged hard cheese. Serve at 10 to 12°C.
