Benjamin Leroux Grand Cru Echézeaux 2022

Benjamin Leroux's Echézeaux is drawn from En Orveaux, one of the coolest climats within the grand cru, on the Chambolle side.

Echézeaux is a large grand cru made up of many named climats above Clos de Vougeot in Flagey-Echézeaux, and which climat a wine comes from matters a great deal. En Orveaux covers about five hectares on the upper slope, bordering Chambolle-Musigny and exposed to winds funnelling down the Orveau valley, which holds ripening back. There is very little topsoil before the roots meet hard limestone, of the sort found further south at Premeaux, and the wines carry finesse, perfume and a cool, vibrant close rather than obvious weight. Leroux fermented this release with 50% whole bunches, and the crop filled just one new 450-litre barrel.

Approachable earlier than most grand crus but rewarding eight to twelve years; serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, mushroom dishes or soft washed-rind cheese.
